You might be wondering: why doesn’t the Dr. Evil–style terrorist, just buy this book, and read the spoilers for himself. We have to assume that part of being that evil includes a general unwillingness to buy good things (such as this book!).
When I discuss trolley cases with my students they always wonder why there are incapacitated people on the tracks. If they are there as a result of their own bad actions (for instance, they drank too much, or some such), many students have the intuition that they partially deserve their fate. I don’t share this intuition, but just to avoid this sort of concern, let’s suppose that the evil terrorist from the previous example drugged them and left them there.
Even though this is, by design, a far-fetched case, I like to make things as plausible as possible. So, what could possibly explain the strange request from the guy at the switch? It’s the brute fact that Harry Potter fans can be a tad weird at times.
The Revenant is not one of those movies that make the list of things that can never be spoiled, in part because it is not that great (but close!), and in part because the significant events of the movie are historical events, and knowledge of them is pretty much out there. So, to get this example to work, just assume that it all takes place when the film was still in the theaters on its initial run.
Spoiler warnings that are also trigger warnings can make for tough cases, as it is often the case that offering a trigger warning on a topic is, by itself, enough to trigger the very thing that the warning was designed to prevent.
To be clear, I’m not suggesting that euthanasia is unjust. I’m just willing to grant it for the sake of making this point.
